THE Colne Valley Trust wants volunteers to give details of historic iron gates.
The Slaithwaite-based trust runs the River Colne Project and project officer Mick Smith is responsible for the volunteer appeal.
He is trying to create a catalogue of historic iron gates found in fields in the upper Colne Valley, around Slaithwaite and Marsden.
Mr Smith said: "We don't know much about these gates at the moment. It would be interesting to see if there are any links between them.
"There are a number of different styles. Maybe a style was specific to a landowner or specific to a blacksmith. We don't know, but with the help of volunteers we can get closer to answering these questions."
West Yorkshire Archaeological Services are helping him.
They are running a free training day next Saturday for people willing to help hunt out the gates. It will be at the trust's officers, next to the canal.
The sessions run from 10am to 11.30am, 1pm to 2.30pm and 4pm to 5.30pm. To book, phone 01484 847798.
