A plea for a listed building to be saved for the community has been made to Kirklees Cabinet.

Marcus George yesterday asked councillors to consider an asset transfer of the Grade II listed Fieldhead building in Lindley.

The former children’s home is being marketed for sale via Walker Singleton for an undisclosed sum.

It’s one of 45 buildings and locations being sold off by Kirklees Council to get rid of surplus assets and generate up to 25m over the next five years.

Mr George presented a deputation at yesterday’s Cabinet meeting and said: “It’s currently up for sale, however we believe that there is more that can be done and ask the council for this asset transfer to go ahead.

“In the short term Lindley has lost Lindley Moor, in the long-term let us keep this.”

Mr George said it would be suitable as a community centre, centre for education, disabled services and for hot-desks for emerging businesses.

Clr Mehboob Khan, Kirklees leader, told him that he should put together a business plan with full costings for Cabinet to consider.

“We’ll look at the capital receipt and take a judgement on what in best in the long term,” he said.

Clr David Sheard, Cabinet member for Resources, said he would meet Mr George to discuss it further, but warned: “That sort of thing won’t be cheap to deliver in a building of this age.

“There will be a huge cost.”
