GREEN-FINGERED pupils from across Huddersfield celebrated their poetic talents today.

About 300 youngsters from seven primary schools took part in a poetry competition to mark National Tree Week.

It was organised by Huddersfield Friends of the Earth.

Today about 30 winners read out their poems at Huddersfield Children's Library.

Certificates and prizes, including theatre tickets and books, were presented.

The poems will remain on display throughout this month.

Tim Padmore, the co-ordinator of Huddersfield Friends of the Earth, said: "We were delighted with the response to this competition.

"We feel an important part of our work should be promoting educational projects which allow children to explore and learn about the environment," he added.
