A SUCCESSFUL crime- busting project is being expanded in West Yorkshire.

Dob In A Dealer, a large anti-drugs campaign, is now being run across more of the county.

Police chiefs were in Leeds today to announce the extension of the scheme into the city, following its success in Huddersfield, Bradford and Halifax.

And they urged the county's communities to unite against drug dealers.

The move today saw the four Leeds Drugs Teams team up with Crimestoppers to disrupt local drug markets and drive drug dealers out of Leeds.

The Dob in a Dealer campaign was launched in Bradford in August, 2002.

It urges people to expose dealers who are destroying lives by ringing anonymously with information.

Since the campaign started as part of the award-winning Crackdown in Bradford, Crimestoppers have received more than 2,000 pieces of information that could be acted on about suspected drug dealing in Bradford and Keighley alone. Through linking this information to police intelligence nearly 200 people have been arrested.

Hundreds more people have been arrested as the scheme was extended to Calderdale and Kirklees, with police mounting many successful operations in both areas.

Dob in a Dealer posters and leaflets will be distributed throughout town centres and housing estates over the coming months in a bid to gain information about people dealing in the evil of drugs.

Det Sgt Ian Froggett, Crimestoppers regional co-ordinator, said: "Dob in a Dealer has been the most successful Crimestoppers campaign in West Yorkshire.

"We are delighted to extend the campaign to Leeds and provide people with a point of contact so they can play their part in improving quality of life issues in their communities.

"We don't seek to identify callers. They remain totally anonymous at all times.

"What we want is the information the police require to take drug dealers off the streets. This could be the name of a dealer, numbers of vehicles you suspect may be involved in dealing or descriptions of offenders."

Anyone with information about suspected drug dealing activity is urged to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
