POLICE found a driver over the drink drive limit in a clampdown on taxis.

Officers made the arrest during a six-hour blitz on taxis across Huddersfield.

They also found another driver with no insurance.

And one taxi had tyres that were so badly worn, cords were showing through on two of them.

The horror stories were revealed to stress to taxi drivers they have a public responsibility to make sure their vehicles are completely roadworthy at all times.

Sgt Dean Taylor, of Kirklees Road Policing Unit, said: "It is essential we do these checks to secure the integrity of the licensed vehicles and the safety of passengers and other road users.

"Anyone touting for hire without a licence or a roadworthy vehicle will not be tolerated.

"They bring an unnecessary danger to our roads and must be dealt with."

In just six hours police stopped 42 taxis in Huddersfield.

Three were in such a poor state of repair they were immediately banned from the road.

A further five drivers were told to carry out repairs within a few days.

These problems included defective tyres, steering problems and worn brakes.
