POLICE want security cameras to be installed at an Elland pub.

Their demand comes after an application for longer opening hours at the Traveller's Rest in the town's Huddersfield Road.

Calderdale police licensing officer Insp Peter Heaton called for cameras as a crime prevention measure.

He said: "An area of the premises cannot be seen from the bar and as such is unsupervised.

"We have lodged an objection until someone confirms that CCTV will be provided."

Owners Admiral Taverns are seeking the go-ahead to stay open until 12.30am Sunday to Thursday and until 1.30am Friday and Saturday.

Calderdale councillors are due to decide on the bid at a town hall meeting in the new year.

Insp Heaton said new tenants had indicated they would comply with the police demand.

But they would be unable to do so until the pub was officially theirs.

He said police were also objecting to a part of the application involving dancing to music.

This should not be allowed unless a separate dance floor was built, said Insp Heaton.

Councillors will vote on January 5.
