A CRACKDOWN on anti-social behaviour in Huddersfield town centre resulted in two men being charged for breach of Asbo.

The multi-agency operation was led by Huddersfield South Neighbourhood Policing Team and saw four teams take to the streets at town centre “hot spots”.

They were targeting street drinking, breach of Asbos, and drug users.

A 52-year-old man was arrested in John William Street for breaching an Asbo not to be in the town centre.

And a 29-year-old man was arrested for breaching an Asbo not to be in St George’s Square.

Both were later charged.

Sgt Mandy Mellor told the Examiner: “We had around 16 people from varying agencies to assist with the day of action.

“The aim of the task was high-visibility police presence and agency presence.

“We were out for seven hours and came across numerous street drinkers in the town centre.

“We focused our efforts on Byram Court, Brunswick Street and Huddersfield bus station.

“We reinforced the message that there is a no public drinking zone within the confines of the ring road.”

Organisations involved included housing groups, drug and alcohol services, Lifeline and Kirklees Council Licensing and Street Rangers.
