Police closed an exposed country lane at rush hour after a lorry was blown over.

Officers shut the B6118 Highgate Lane near Hopton Horse Centre between Kirkheaton and Upper Hopton after gusts of up to 60mph left a vehicle on its side.

No-one was hurt in the incident and the road later re-opened.

A curtain-sided HGV in front was left rocking precariously from side to side, amid fears that too would topple over.

Police shut Highgate Lane at the crossroads next to the Blacksmiths Arms in Heaton Moor Road in the early evening rush hour.

The road remained closed while a recovery truck was called.

Kirklees Council crews cleared the floodwaters and the road was re-opened. Traffic was delayed as a result.

Kirklees and Calderdale were lashed by high winds and heavy rain and Huddersfield weather expert Paul Stevens said gusts reached 60mph on the tops.

“That’s enough to catch you off guard in exposed areas,” he said.

Cleckheaton firefighters had to rescue a man who clambered onto his roof in Allen Croft, Birkenshaw, to fix a leak this morning.

The roof is covered in green moss and he found it too slippy to get back down. After 45 minutes of trying fire crews were alerted at 11.30am.

Watch Commander Damian Cameron said: “They did exactly the right thing to call us. A fall from that height would have been extremely serious and he was very cold and shivering. We used a ladder to get up to the roof and then a roof ladder to lead him to safety.”
