THE police clampdown on yobs in Lowerhouses has started.

Officers last night made four arrests.

One of the arrests was the first time anyone in Huddersfield has been detained using police powers given under the 2003 Anti-Social Behaviour Act.

A 9pm curfew, in Lowerhouses and Ashenhurst, was brought in for the first time on Wednesday.

Last night, a 15-year-old Lowerhouses youth was arrested for failing to comply with the direction of a constable after being told to move.

Pc Dave McSweeney, of Huddersfield police, said the youth would appear before Huddersfield Youth Court next Tuesday.

At 8.45pm, police already patrolling the area responded to calls that house windows had been damaged by pellets fired from a pellet gun.

They arrested two Lowerhouses boys, aged 13 and 14, and a 15-year-old from Primrose Hill.

They were detained on suspicion of criminal damage and released on police bail until August 10.

Earlier in the day, arsonists had attacked a garage on Lowerhouses Lane, Lowerhouses, and set fire to a car inside.

The blaze, at 2.40pm, destroyed the car and the fierce heat blew holes in the side of the concrete garage, which was badly damaged.

The 2003 Anti-Social Behaviour Act has given police extra powers to move on teenagers who cause problems with abuse, bad behaviour, fear and intimidation.

It has been implemented as a three-month pilot scheme in Lowerhouses and Ashenhurst.

The campaign began after police received complaints from people living in the area.

Under the new legislation, police and police community support officers have sweeping powers to move on unruly youngsters.
