POLICE swooped on scrapyards across West Yorkshire yesterday in a special campaign against metal thieves.

Officers took part in a European Action Against Metal Thieves Day which was spearheaded in the UK by British Transport Police.

They visited scrapyards to remind owners of their responsibilities not to deal in stolen metal and to make sure their purchases are legitimate.

The force will also continue to offer advice to potential targets such as churches and utilities companies to help them make metal harder to steal and less attractive to thieves.
