Detectives are investigating reports that a gun was fired as rival gangs clashed in a secluded lane near homes in Dalton.
Police were called to Standiforth Lane at around 9pm on Saturday following reports of a gunshot.
The distrubance is thought to have involved several men, two cars and a shotgun, although this is yet to be confirmed by police.
The alley, which runs next to Standiforth Recreation Ground, was cordoned off on Saturday night.
The following morning police combed the lane and across the playing fields on the recreation ground looking for shell cases or other evidence.
A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “On Saturday night there was a report by a member of the public of a firearm being discharged so officers have been searching the area to find evidence of it.”
A neighbour said: “I’d heard there were four lads, one of them had a shotgun and they were looking for someone.”
Another resident said: “We heard there were two cars involved.
“I think it was some lads off the estate and they were bringing their trouble over here.”
Another added: “There were police all over the place. They didn’t tell us much.”
