Police are investigating the suspected rape of a woman in Huddersfield town centre early today.

A young woman who had been out in town last night claimed she had been attacked in a secluded back street area in the early hours.

After the attacker fled the woman dialled 999 and police attended the scene.

The attack is said to have happened in Green Street, off Lower Fitzwilliam Street, near Domino’s pizza, between 2am and 3am.

Forensic officers were today launching a search for clues and police taped off an area near the railway viaducts at the back of the Marimonte restaurant.

Detectives are treating the attack as a “serious sexual assault” and a team of officers are working on the case.

Det Insp Andy Leonard, of Kirklees CID, said the woman was left traumatised but not badly hurt.

He declined to reveal the age of the woman but said she had been to a club shortly before the alleged incident occurred.

She was not badly hurt, he said, but had been left shocked. She was being interviewed by specially-trained officers.

The woman, who is from Huddersfield, was alone at the time of the alleged attack but had been with friends earlier.

Police are appealing for witnesses who were in that area of town at the time and officers are trawling through closed circuit TV pictures for clues.

Det Insp Leonard said no suspect had so far been identified.

“I have a number of detectives working on this case,” he said. “We are checking CCTV images and seeking witnesses.”
