A POLICEMAN has appeared in court in Huddersfield to face serious sex charges.
Peter Newton - who had been working as a police constable in Sowerby Bridge - has been charged with rape and indecent assault.
The charges relate to a 15-year-old girl.
Newton, who is 49, made only a brief appearance yesterday before magistrates in Huddersfield.
He was remanded in custody for a week and is expected to appear on October 9 at Huddersfield Magistrates' Court.
Newton, who had formerly worked in Brighouse, was arrested by police officers in Huddersfield on Tuesday night.
It is understood that Newton, who had served for many years with the West Yorkshire Police, resigned from his job prior to his court appearance.
Officers normally have to serve at least one month's notice but resignations can be accepted immediately.
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said today: "A 49-year-old Calderdale man appeared at Huddersfield Magistrates' Court yesterday charged with rape and indecent assault.
"He has been remanded in custody to appear back at the same court on Thursday, October 9."
