A PROJECT set up to fight crime in Rastrick is to get a police boost over the coming weeks.

The Circle Project - running in areas across Calderdale and Wakefield - is a Government-funded scheme to improve the quality of life.

The scheme in Rastrick is to receive high visibility police patrols over the next three weeks.

Officers will tackle particular concerns raised by residents.

It will involve bobbies supported by special constables and police community support officers.

The aim is to deter crime, provide a reassuring presence for the community and reduce anti-social and nuisance behaviour.

The Circle Project was launched in six areas last April and project officers were appointed to each one.

A group has been set up in each area. These groups include residents, representatives from schools, businesses and youth groups, to help identify and resolve specific problems.

The Rastrick community project officer, Fiona Pearson, said: "A number of concerns have been identified in Rastrick, the principal one being anti-social behaviour.

"Locally we have been working closely with schools to develop activities for young people that will divert them away from this type of behaviour."

Sgt Mark Eilbeck, from West Yorkshire Police's Target Team which is co-ordinating the police blitz, said: "This operation has been set up in a direct effort to respond to the concerns of local people.

"We will take action wherever possible to deter crime and anti-social behaviour."
