Police have praised the invaluable contribution made by volunteers and special constables working in Kirklees.

And they hope to recruit more of them, along with more Special Constables, in the district to coincide with the National Volunteers Week.

National Volunteers Week runs all week with National Specials Weekend also being marked at the end of the week on June 6 and 7.

A Specials recruiting drive will be held in Huddersfield to coincide with the campaign.

There are 20 police support volunteers working in Kirklees whose work includes carrying out crime ringbacks, assisting with the Explorers programme and providing administrative support.

The Kirklees district also has 48 community volunteers whose work ranges from distributing leaflets about crime prevention to handing out “Spikeys” in Huddersfield town centre to prevent drink spiking incidents over the Christmas period.

In addition to the volunteer staff members there are also 70 special constables working through the district with a further 50 currently going through training.

One of the special constables, Senior Section Officer Stuart Clarke, won the Special Constable of the Year Award at the recent West Yorkshire Policing Awards. The award recognised the exemplary commitment and enthusiasm he has shown in providing support to the Kirklees district in a voluntary capacity within the Special Constabulary for over 20 years.

Chief Superintendent Tim Kingsman.

Kirklees District Commander, Chief Supt Tim Kingsman said: “The invaluable work that our volunteers and special constables do in Kirklees cannot be overstated.

“These are people who give their free time, often around other work commitments, to play their part in supporting our frontline officers and staff in keeping our communities safe. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of them for their dedication and continued hard work.”

Anyone interested in volunteering for West Yorkshire Police or becoming a special constable can find out more at a Charity Village event taking place at Greenhead Park, Huddersfield, this Saturday, 6 June.
