ARSONISTS are to blame for a blaze which swept through 20 cars in a Huddersfield scrapyard.

The flames were spotted at Albert Haigh's scrapyard on Firth Street, Huddersfield, at 11pm on Sunday.

The fire covered an area almost 100ft by 100ft and extra crews from Slaithwaite and Elland were quickly drafted in to help Huddersfield firefighters.

Sub-officer Lee Benson, of Huddersfield fire station, said: "The cars were mainly piled up, but some of them looked to be in quite good condition.

"There were several small explosions caused by fuel in vehicle petrol tanks and we had to be very careful of propane cylinders that are used to dismantle cars and were caught up in the fire."

The fire is being treated as malicious and Huddersfield police are investigating.
