Police have renewed their appeal for witnesses after an elderly man died following a head-on collision in Huddersfield.

The incident occurred at 10am on Thursday on Lindley Moor Road, 75 yards beyond the Wappy Spring Inn.

The 80-year-old driver of a green Renault Megane collided with a blue Ford Focus and despite being taken to hospital medics were unable to save his life.

A 56-year-old man, the Ford Focus driver, was taken to hospital with serious injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

Det Sgt Mat Tunney, of the Major Collision and Enquiry Team, said: “I would appeal to anyone who was driving around the area near to Lindley Moor Road and may have seen either of the vehicles prior to the incident, or anyone who witnessed the collision itself to come forward.

“Enquiries are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of what took place.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact MCET via 101, quoting 458 of July 7.

The accident has led to renewed calls for serious attention to be focused on the speed limits for Lindley Moor Road.

Trevor Simpkins, landlord of the Wappy Spring, told the Examiner he had contacted Kirklees Council about enforcing speed limits on the road.

He said the council had reduced the speed limit to 40mph from 50mph several years ago but the problem was that it was not enforced.
