It was a lucky escape for one driver – but police were left picking up the pieces.

Officers were called to Woodhead Road in Berry Brow on Sunday evening after a car smashed through the wall and rolled down the banking.

But by the time they arrived at the scene near the Robin Hood Hill junction, the silver Renault’s occupants were nowhere to be found.

A spokesman for Kirklees Rural Neighbourhood Policing Team wrote on Facebook: “Officers have been down the banking as they had to check the car, and the immediate area for any casualties.

“There was nobody with the car, so we can only assume they have had a very lucky escape. We’ll be making further enquiries to ensure this is the case.”

A witness wrote on the page to say she had seen four men earlier looking stressed, with one on his mobile phone, despite the accident not being reported by the driver.

The witness said she saw the men “walking backwards and forwards looking stressed and one on his phone.”

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “We were called at 8.18pm to Woodhead Road following reports of a collision.

“The vehicle was on the embankment. It appeared it had been there for some time and no-one was inside.

“A search was made in the nearby area to check if there were any injured people.

“The vehicle was recovered at 10.08pm. Police are now making enquiries about the registered owner of the vehicle.”

Anyone with information should contact West Yorkshire Police on 101.
