A village beauty spot was sealed off by police after a body was discovered.

Officers shut down footpaths leading on to the popular Millennium Green in Clayton West after the man’s body was found at 3.20pm this afternoon.

A number of officers were called to the scene, as were paramedics from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, and vehicles parked up in the village High Street.

It is thought the grim find was made by local youngsters who had been playing on the Green.

It is not believed there are any suspicious circumstances but enquiries are continuing.

One resident said: “We saw police and the ambulance crews arrive and we heard rumours that a man has been found dead.

“It seems he was found a long way off the road and there was talk at one point of bringing in a 4 x 4 vehicle to reach the spot.

“Police then put up tape to stop people using the footpath which crosses the Green.

“Someone has suggested the man had collapsed but no-one knows for certain”.

The Millennium Green comprises 4.27 hectares of traditional parkland in the heart of the village, which runs from High Street down towards the M1 junction at Haigh. The land became a Millennium Green as one of the 25 pilot projects funded by the Millennium Commission to celebrate the turn of the century.

Originally the garden of a local industrialist, it is separated from the house he built by a traditional haha, a grassy slope built to preserve a view.

Cattle graze on the Green through the summer months and it is crossed by the well-used Kirklees Way. It is a favourite dog walking area and is also used as a playground by groups of local youngsters.
