Police carried out two drugs busts in Kirklees as part of a week-long clampdown on crime.

Operation Viper is seeing increased police presence on a string of specific tasks to bring criminals to justice.

Yesterday officers descended on the One Spot Hand Car Wash off, Huddersfield Road, Ravensthorpe, shortly before 8.30am.

Police were acting on intelligence which identified the premises was being used for the supply of controlled drugs.

And in the afternoon a 39-year-old man was arrested after 11 bags of suspected drugs were found in his vehicle.

They stopped a Toyota Celica in Southgate, Huddersfield, and officers then moved to search his house.

He has since been arrested and is in custody.

The earlier garage raid involved plain clothed officers from Huddersfield and Dewsbury CID, dogs unit officers, supported by Neighbourhood Policing Team colleagues in Dewsbury.

West Yorkshire Police Dog Handler Pc Mike Smith explained : “Woody is a Springer Spaniel and he is trained to detect drugs, cash and firearms.

“I first make sure the area is safe for the dog and in as contained environment as possible.

“I then let him free to search the space, in this case a garage.

“Then I take him round and search each area more thoroughly.

“The third phase is to search higher items but in this situation its not safe as there is a lot of unstable items such as tyres.”

Police later confirmed the search of three garage buildings resulted in no drugs being detected.

The owner of the car wash was not present at the time of the raid.

Det Insp Dave Stainthorpe, of Huddersfield CID said: “We get a lot of intelligence on drugs activity and we take this seriously.

“Unfortunately in the Ravensthorpe premises, the very nature of this activity means some times we don’t recover anything.

“That said, this sends a clear message to anyone in Kirklees involved in the supply or sale of controlled drugs that we will continue to seek out and bring to justice in the future.”

Speaking about Operation Viper he added: “It is a force-wide initiative to reduce crime and increase detection .

“We traditionally see an increase in crime in the winter months as the nights draw in.

“Alongside the initiative we are running the week of action on specific themes such as burglary, vehicle crime, drugs warrants and metal theft.

“Alongside this we have Neighbourhood Policing Teams encouraging the public on how to avoid being a victim of opportunistic crime, such as purse dippings.”
