WEST Yorkshire Police has been praised for its energy-saving efforts.

The force has come first out of 39 police forces in terms of the least energy cost in comparison to the size of its estate.

The force has received accreditation from the Institute of Energy.

The average energy cost of all of the Forces taking part was £0.5m more than what West Yorkshire pays on its energy bills.

Energy manager George Smith said: "We have looked at the ways we have been running our heating systems and made various modifications to get the systems working at their optimum.

"We have also modified air handling units and installed efficient boilers and cooling systems.

"We have also introduced lighting controls and flat screen monitors which are far more energy efficient.

"In three years we have reduced the amount of energy used by 7.5%, despite an increase in the number of buildings we have."
