POLICE today vowed: “We will catch the soccer yobs”.

A special team has been set up to track down those involved in terrifying brawls in Waterloo before Friday’s Town v Millwall game.

They are trawling through CCTV footage to try and identify the trouble-makers who fought running battles along Wakefield Road with pool cues, bottles and bricks.

There are fears that much of the violence was pre-planned.

And there are fears that the two clubs could meet again next month in the League I play-offs.

Officers believe large numbers of hooligans gathered at Waterloo prior to the crucial League I game to “ambush” Millwall supporters heading into Huddersfield from the M1 motorway.

They struck when a coach carrying 50 Millwall supporters pulled up at traffic lights at the Wakefield Road/Penistone Road junction.

Three more minibuses filled with Millwall fans also stopped at the scene and the supporters fought running battles with Huddersfield fans.

A number of fans were injured and onlookers told of terrifying scenes as people were hit with bricks and with smashed bottles.

Huge numbers of police were called to the scene and officers filmed many of those involved with CCTV cameras.

Those images are now being studied by specialist football intelligence officers who work with both soccer clubs.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “At 6.59pm on Friday night, police responded to reports of disorder at Wakefield road, Waterloo.

“No serious injuries were reported and an investigation has started.

“As part of the investigation, CCTV footage of the disorder and the offenders will be studied.

“A dedicated Investigation team has been set up with specially-trained officers working to identify offenders who are believed to be supporters of both Huddersfield Town and Millwall football clubs.

“The Millwall supporters who are believed to be involved did not attend the game and were escorted away from the ground.

“Police will not tolerate any violence or disorder of this type and offenders will deal with it severely.

“Anyone who witnessed the disorder and has any information about those involved should contact Det Sgt Bellhouse at Kirklees CID on 0845 60 60 606 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”

There were a few minor incidents of further disorder near the Galpharm Stadium after the game, which Town won 1-0, but no arrests.
