POLICE have dismissed concerns that Holmfirth Police Station could close.

The station in Huddersfield Road, Holmfirth, is currently manned during office hours on weekdays as well as running monthly surgeries for residents.

Rumours have been circulating in the Holme Valley that it could shut.

Supt David Lunn, from Kirklees Police, said: “There are no plans to close down Holmfirth police station.

“We are committed to Holmfirth remaining open as an operational base for local Neighbourhood Officers to work from and continue to provide a first class service for the benefit of their community.”

The renewed commitment in Kirklees comes in stark contrast to the national picture with a third of police stations due to close their doors within months as forces battle to cut costs.

The Police Federation has warned that 350 public counters out of 931 will close.

West Yorkshire currently has 44 police stations and information obtained via a Freedom of Information request showed that two stations have closed and one has opened since 2006.

The Police Federation is continuing to lobby the Government about the risks to public safety if they press ahead with the planned 20% cut to policing in the next three years.

The federation has warned about rising crime and the impact these cuts will have on public safety.
