POLICE last night renewed their vow to track down a man still wanted over the Birkby murders.

Shahid Mohammed, 21, of Thornton Lodge, vanished within hours of being freed from police custody as they investigated the firebomb attack in May 2002.

And despite a worldwide manhunt, detectives have not been able to trap him.

But Det Insp John Halstead, who is leading the inquiry, told survivors of the blaze every effort was being made to find him.

"It's with a tinge of sadness that I have to say we have not yet found him. But we will find him, however long it takes.

"He vanished on May 12 when we had to free him on bail because we could hold him no longer.

"We have had sightings in parts of the UK, in Spain and in Pakistan. There are complex diplomatic issues to resolve if he is abroad and we are in liaison with the Home Office and the Foreign Office.

"Every officer who was involved in this huge, complex inquiry is determined Shahid Mohammed will be caught and brought to justice."
