Police are still waiting to find out how a Huddersfield man was badly hurt.

They have been unable to talk to the man who was found with serious head injuries in Moldgreen on Sunday night.

He is detained in Leeds General Infirmary but is still not fit enough to speak to officers.

Detectives say they are keeping an open mind as to how he came by his injuries.

The man, who is 38 and from Moldgreen, was found collapsed on the pavement at the junction of Broad Lane and Church Street at 8.40pm on Sunday.

Police do not know if he fell, was struck by a vehicle or was attacked. There is a cash machine only yards from where the man was found by a passer-by.

Det Insp Stephanie Wiseman, of Kirklees CID, said: “We are still working to establish exactly what happened.

“It may well be there was a medical reason for a fall or something may have happened to him. We are not ruling out anything at this stage.

“We had hoped we could speak to him at the hospital but when doctors tried to bring him round his response was not as good as they had hoped and he remains under sedation”.

Police scenes of crime experts spent hours at the scene checking for clues and possible evidence.

Police are also appealing for witnesses and urged anyone who was in the area on Sunday evening to contact them via 101.
