A mum who passed out drunk leaving her baby girl unattended in their home has admitted child neglect.

Police found the 10-month-old in a distressed state after forcing their way into the Huddersfield property.

Kirklees magistrates heard that the child was found next to her collapsed mum by a lit fire.

A baby gate leading to an unlocked cellar door was also open.

The mum, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said she had downed beer after finding a distressing note in her partner’s clothing.

The court heard that police were called to the woman's home by the baby’s father at 6.45pm on October 9.

The woman’s partner could see her collapsed through the living room window but didn’t have any keys to get into the locked house.

Vanessa Jones, prosecuting, said: “She had her back to the gas fire which was switched on.

“To her left side was the 10-month-old baby and she was sat next to (the defendant) who had her right hand around her.

“Both were in a confined space between the sofa and the fire.

“The baby was very distressed and was crying and red in the face.”

A police officer banged on the window to try and wake the mother but when was unable to do so he and his colleagues forced their way in through the front door.

They were joined by paramedics who found the mother now awake and in a confused state.

Mrs Jones said: “They could smell alcohol on her breath and her speech was slurred.

“Two empty cans of beer were found, one in the living room near to where she’d been.

“There was also an open door with access to the cellar which was open and there were steps which concerned them.”

The mother said that she had an alcohol problem and was taking medication for her anxiety and depression.

The court heard that the child is now living with her father at a different address to the mother.

Social services has become involved with the case and the mother can currently only have supervised contact with the baby.

In interview she told police that at 8.30am her partner left for work and she later went to a local shop and bought eight cans of beer.

Robert Dawson, mitigating, said: “She’d found a note indicating he’d applied for a transfer of the tenancy into his sole name which was upsetting.

“She’s bought the alcohol, been drinking and fallen asleep on the floor.

“But she accepts that by having so much to drink she wasn’t in the position to be properly caring for the needs of her child.”

Mr Dawson added that the baby was not found near to the fire and it had a fire guard.

Magistrates ordered a full report ahead of the mum’s sentencing.

In the meantime she is banned from contacting her former partner or having unsupervised contact with a child aged under 16.
