SMALL firms in Huddersfield are being asked about their traffic troubles.

They are among 5,600 West Yorkshire companies to be polled online by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).

The survey aims to find out how transport issues - including congestion and parking charges - affect the local economy.

The FSB, which represents the interests of 14,500 member firms in the Yorkshire and Humber region, said the survey would show what small businesses think of transport issues.

Companies will also be asked their opinions on public transport and what measures would persuade them to use trains and buses more often.

FSB West Yorkshire regional chairman Mike Goodman, who runs internet-based IT services firm Stop Watch Web Ltd in Birstall, said: "There is a lot of grand talk about the impact of traffic congestion, but relatively little action.

"The time is right to gain greater grass- roots understanding of how traffic problems affect small businesses - which make up 58% of the private sector workforce.

Mr Goodman said: "West Yorkshire, like the rest of the region, has endured decades of under-investment in the transport infrastructure and receives less per head than the UK average.

"One reason for the survey is that we want to see this imbalance addressed and for Yorkshire to get its fair share of transport investment in order to alleviate congestion and give people a real choice about how they travel."
