Huddersfield will be awash with the taste of salted popcorn and Americana when the curtains go up on a charity drive-in-cinema.

The historic Bates Mill in Milford Street is the unlikely location for the ambitious event, which will see one of its walls transformed into a nine metre high and five metre wide movie screen.

The brainchild of Huddersfield video production company Paradigm Creative Ltd it hopes to raise much-needed cash for the town’s Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice at Brackenhall.

Up to 70 cars will be able to take up a pew at the venue at a cost of £30 each. Film-goers will be getting into the Hallowe’en spirit by watching zombie comedy Shaun of the Dead – come rain or shine.

Everyone will then be asked to tune their radios to a special FM frequency, which will stream the audio soundtrack as the film reel gets rolling.

One of the organisers, Katrina Cliffe, said: “It’s something that the company have been wanting to do for a long time and we’re really excited because it’s something very different.

“We decided to choose Forget Me Not because it’s a great charity which offers fantastic support and does so much work for children and their families from around the area.

“We just thought it would be a good idea to do something for them for a change.”

Popcorn and burgers will also be on offer for an additional cost, thanks to Bradley’s restaurant in Huddersfield.

A premiere of a new fundraising drive video for the hospice will also be showcased at the event, which was created by Paradigm Creative free of charge.

Katrina said: “If it goes well we’ll definitely consider going ahead with it and planning for future events, but we’ll just have to wait and see.”

An after party with DJs, which is included in the ticket price, will take place after the screening in the mill to give film-lovers a full night out.

The money will go towards providing children’s, family and bereavement support, complementary therapies and around the clock care for those helped at home and in the hospice’s state-of-the-art centre at Russell House.
