YOUNGSTERS were the stars at the opening of a new play area at a Lindley nursery.

Outgoing Kirklees Mayor Clr Karam Hussain officially opened the new facility at Portland Nursery.

Children, parents and staff were also joined by local nursery owners, ward councillors as well as Christine Renshaw, head of Kirklees Early Years Service and Kirklees development worker Deborah Blakey.

Portland Nurseries has three sites in the Lindley and Edgerton areas.

All three have been successful in their bids for quality and access grants from Kirklees Early Years Service to transform the outdoor play areas of each nursery. Owner Rosemary Murphy said: “With a generous grant of more than £100,000, we have been able to make radical changes to the outdoor play environment.

“We hope that our children will benefit – and other nurseries will visit and be inspired to develop similar spaces for outdoor play.”

Ms Renshaw said: “We want to encourage every childcare provider to apply for a grant to improve the quality, access and flexibility of services to benefit as many Kirklees children and families as possible.”

The outdoor play areas feature sensory gardens, sand pits, chalkboards and areas for children to plant vegetables.
