SCISSETT Post Office has been shut after an investigation.
The sub-postmaster has been suspended and Post Office chiefs say the office may not re-open for months.
The Barnsley Road shop closed suddenly, without warning or explanation.
A Post Office spokeswoman said it could be a long process to get it re-opened.
She added: "The office had to close temporarily when the sub-postmaster was suspended following an audit and pending further inquiries.
"We apologise to customers for any inconvenience.
"We ask that in the meantime they use branches in Skelmanthorpe, Clayton West and Denby Dale."
The spokeswoman refused to say exactly why the sub-postmaster had been suspended.
But industry watchdog Postwatch has already started to lobby the Post Office to get the shop back open.
Anne-Marie Jackson, of Postwatch, said the group would continue to put the pressure on.
"We are obviously concerned about the fact that people can not use their local post office," she said.
"There is no indication as to when it might re-open.
"For a lot of people it will be very hard to get to the alternative offices, even if they are only close by," added Ms Jackson.
"Ideally, we would want them to put a temporary manager in, until such time as something more permanent can be arranged."
