Postal deliveries are still suspended to a number of houses in the Meltham area after a postman was savaged in the street by a dog.

The attack occurred as a post worker called Jack, who is in his 20s, delivered mail in Golcar Brow Road last Friday.

The dog had jumped over a fence in nearby Copley Avenue and latched onto the man’s arm in an agonising attack lasting several minutes.

It was only when a man called Robert Dickinson, of Copley Avenue, dashed to his aid and hit it with a shovel that it finally let go.

The victim was rushed to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary where he underwent emergency surgery on his injured arm.

On Tuesday the Examiner reported that deliveries had been suspended to a number of addresses in the area while the incident was investigated.

The issue has been given greater urgency after it emerged that it was the same dog that seriously attacked another postman Jason Lee in July 2013.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “Unfortunately, deliveries are still suspended to a number of addresses in the Copley Avenue area after one of our postmen was seriously attacked by a dog whilst delivering the mail.

The safety and welfare of our staff is paramount and the suspension of delivery is always a last resort. We sincerely apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused.

“Royal Mail has arranged for mail to be held in Meltham Post Office while the temporary suspension is in place.

“Customers can collect their mail from the Post Office from Friday and should bring photo ID.

“The postman is recovering following the attack and is comfortable thanks to the treatment he has received at the Bradford Royal Infirmary and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary . “Our thoughts are with him and his family at this distressing time.”

The dog involved in the two incidents was seized by police and its owner is set to be interviewed by police.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Enquiries are ongoing.”
