A busy road could close to two-way traffic for more than five weeks.

And a local councillor has questioned the move.

Northern Gas Networks will carry out works on Sunny Bank Road in Mirfield from July 22 the end of August.

While talks are still taking place between the gas firm and Kirklees Council, it could mean there will be no access onto Sunny Bank Road from the A62 Leeds Road.

Instead there would be a diversion of almost three miles, taking in Leeds Road, Stocks Bank Road, Kitson Hill Road and Old Bank Road before motorists can access Sunny Bank Road from another entry point.

Nearby Child Lane at Roberttown will also be closed off to traffic wanting to turn off the A62, with diversions along Leeds Road and Far Common Road.

Northern Gas Networks say they are still holding talks with Kirklees Council to “help minimise any disruption to customers during the project” which will cost £30,000 and see 700m of ageing metal gas mains upgraded.

They expect more details will emerge after Friday, when they will meet with council staff.

Clr Martyn Bolt, Mirfield Conservative, said: “Everyone appreciates works have got to be done, but it seems there’s a lack of thought and they’ve just gone for the easy option.

“Does the whole road need to be dug up or can it be done in sections?

“I think we should be allowed to look at what other options there are before busy roads like this are closed to some traffic and dug up based on a desk top survey without any understanding of the area.

“I think the congestion is going to go back to Heckmondwike and people will be affected, so there needs to be better communication so people can be told to start their commute much sooner.”
