“It's put Huddersfield firmly back on the map.”
Those were the views of Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman as plaudits poured in for table-topping Huddersfield Giants.
The club formed in the birthplace of rugby league lifted the Super League Leaders Shield on Sunday night to end 81 years of hurt.
Mr Sheerman was in Westminster at the weekend but watched the game on TV in a London pub.
“It’s brilliant news for the town as well as for the club.
“We welcome all positive news for Huddersfield and this is certainly up there with the best.
“Ken Davy has worked so hard for this over the years and he does not always get the thanks he deserves.”
Colne Valley MP Jason McCartney tweeted: “Awesome to see the Giants lift the League Leaders Shield – congratulations to everyone at the Huddersfield Giants.”
The Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Martyn Bolt, added his congratulations.
“The Giants securing of the League Leaders Shield for the first time in 81 years has continued to show the town and the wider district of Kirklees in the most favourable light.
“The Giants were recently featured in the highly-acclaimed documentary ‘Town’ with Nicholas Crane and the emphatic win over neighbours Wakefield Trinity Wildcats at Huddersfield’s John Smith’s Stadium concludes a strong campaign and prepares the team for the Super League play-off finals.
“On behalf of myself, the council and the people of Kirklees I heartily congratulate Ken Davy, Paul Anderson and everyone at the Giants. The club has had many ups and downs but this victory is a just reward for the 17 years of dedication and support Ken Davy has given the club.”
RFL Chief Executive Nigel Wood has congratulated the Giants.
The comprehensive 40-0 defeat of Wakefield Trinity Wildcats secured the Super League Leaders Shield for Huddersfield Giants and Wood said: “It is an amazing statistic that Huddersfield last ended the regular season on top of the league 81 years ago and their celebrations are well deserved.
“Huddersfield’s success is reward for a great deal of hard work by a great many people but the feat will be especially sweet for their chairman Ken Davy, who deserves much credit for his unswerving commitment, both to the Giants and to Rugby League in the sport’s birthplace.”
