A TEENAGER is to appear in court today charged with the attempted murder of a former Mirfield priest.

The 19-year-old youth from Halifax, who has not been named, is due to appear at Halifax Magistrates' Court.

He has been charged with the attempted murder of Father Michael Ingwell, a 71-year-old Roman Catholic priest, who was injured in an incident at his home in Halifax on Monday.

Police were called to the house in Clarence Street, Halifax at 11.30pm on Monday, where they found Father Ingwell with a number of stab wounds.

He is still detained in Calderdale Royal Hospital, Halifax.

Father Ingwell was a former priest at St Aidan's Church in Mirfield. He had also worked at St Joseph's Church in Batley Carr.

He also worked as a missionary priest in Peru.
