THE 46th Haydn Wood Musical Festival ended with a superb concert by prize- winners.

It was a concert enjoyed by the Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Margaret Fearnley, and her consort, husband Barry.

Mrs Fearnley is vice-chairman of the Festival and Barry a committee member.

Adjudicator Mrs Margaret Smith, from Leeds, remarked in her summing-up what a pleasure it had been to be there and hear the quality of music performed.

The overall standard had been very high and there had been some stunning performances.

She said: "There is so much talent here that we all must nurture and encourage."

She also praised the accompanists and the organisation of the festival, its friendliness and general ambience and the welcome she had received.

The impressive array of silverware was presented to the young people by the mayor, her consort, local councillors, committee members and donors of the trophies.

Festival chairman Mr John Iredale closed the evening by thanking Mrs Smith and all those who had worked towards the event.
