Production has been suspended at Huddersfield’s Syngenta chemical works after a blaze.

Firefighters were called to the site in Leeds Road at 9.45am on Wednesday after a component failure caused a small fire.

The blaze was quickly dealt with but the incident meant that the supply of steam, needed for the manufacturing process, was lost.

A spokesman for the company said production had been temporarily suspended and the unit made safe. There was no cause for alarm and no-one was hurt.

The spokesman said an electrical component in the switch room of the combined heat and power plant failed. The plant supplies steam for industrial use across the whole site, operated under contract by Cofley, a GDF Suez company.

In a statement the spokesman said: “As a result of the incident, steam supply to the site was lost and Syngenta staff have been working closely with site contract partners to assess the root cause of the incident and to safely re-instate supply as soon as possible.

“Production on site has been temporarily suspended and put into a safe state. The site has full supply of electricity and there is no need for nearby residents to be alarmed.

“A limited amount of steam is expected to be available by the evening of Friday November 27, with normal supply service restored over the coming days, as repairs are undertaken.”

Fire crews, two from Huddersfield and one from Mirfield, spent around three hours at the scene.

The company thanked West Yorkshire Fire Service for their help.
