A PROFESSOR at Huddersfield University has been recognised for his work.

Prof Mike Page has received this year’s Research and Development for Society Award for his work leading a highly innovative research team which helps companies find cleaner and greener ways to manufacture their products.

The award is made annually by the Yorkshire and Humber regional group of the Society of Chemical Industry, which was established in 1881.

Prof Page, emeritus professor and a former deputy vice-chancellor of the university, heads a team of eight chemists working under the name of Innovative Physical Organic Solutions.

IPOS, which is dedicated to working closely with industry, is based in a newly-equipped multi-million pound laboratory at the university.

IPOS was awarded a grant of £2.8m by the European Regional Development Fund to meet the cost of creating the lab and installing £1m worth of equipment.

Now IPOS is on target to work closely with at least 50 companies in the Yorkshire and Humber region – to help them solve research problems and find cleaner, greener and more efficient manufacturing processes.

IPOS has also formed overseas links – for example helping a Norwegian company that is developing new ways to carry out body scans.

Prof Page’s specialist areas of research include how chemical reactions occur, medicinal chemistry, the mechanism of action of enzymes and drug design.

He has published about 200 research papers and edited and co-authored several books. Prof Page has previously won the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Perkin Prize and the Organic Reaction Mechanisms Prize.
