She has chalked up an astonishing 176 criminal convictions.

And now a Huddersfield woman has another to add to the list.

Rachel Matthews stole two bottles of wine from a supermarket after becoming desperate for a drink.

Matthews, of Fartown Green Road in Fartown, admitted the theft from Morrisons.

Kirklees magistrates heard that the 41-year-old entered the King Street store on January 11.

She headed straight to the chilled section, removed the bottles of wine and place them in her bag.

Matthews was immediately stopped by staff as she left the store with the stolen goods.

She handed over the wine, worth £10, and was arrested.

The Huddersfield court was told that Matthews said she fancied a drink.

She had 176 offences on her record, 122 of which were theft related.

Jonathan Slawinski, mitigating, said that his client previously had a class A drug habit for 18 years.

She managed to rid herself of this habit but later turned to drink.

Mr Slawinksi said: “People often move from one substance to another and she’s started to develop a drink issue.

“The last couple of years there’s been reference to drink-related offending.

“Every now and then she slips off the wagon (but) she’s motivated to come off the drink.”

Magistrates ordered Matthews to complete nine months of alcohol treatment as a direct alternative to custody.

She must also pay £85 costs and £60 victim surcharge.
