COUNCILLORS have been asked to give their opinions on a proposed college merger.

Kirklees Council’s Scrutiny Committee has been asked by a Lindley councillor to investigate the merging of Huddersfield Technical College and Dewsbury College.

The Learning and Skills Council, which funds both institutions, wants to merge them because of financial problems at Dewsbury.

But Lib Dem Clr Tony Woodhead is concerned about the proposal.

He believes the move could damage Dewsbury College.

He said: “These are two big local institutions so there should be some discussion.

“If there is a merger then the management will be based in Huddersfield. I think there’s a danger it would downgrade Dewsbury College.

“On education grounds it seems not such a good idea and there are rarely economies of scale in cases like this. I don’t see the logic of this proposal.”

Clr Woodhead is surprised no other councillor has raised this issue.

The Scrutiny Committee will consider his request to look into the matter today. However, the council has no power over either college.
