PROTESTERS are expected to target Batley Town Hall tonight as a British National Party candidate tries to gain a Kirklees Council seat in a by-election.

David Exley is standing for the far-Right party in an election for the Heckmondwike ward.

The election was called after Labour councillor Tim Crowther resigned. He is running as an independent in today's election, saying he is disillusioned with party politics.

Since the candidates were announced, anti-racist groups have run a campaign in the area in an attempt to persuade voters against voting BNP.

In neighbouring Calderdale the BNP won a seat in a Halifax a by-election in January and another in main elections on May 1. One success was in Mixenden and the other in Illingworth.

Tonight's Kirklees count is taking place at the town hall.

The candidates are: Tabasum Aslam (Lib Dem), Tim Crowther (Ind), David Exley (BNP), Roger Roberts (Con), Florence Smith (Lab) and Heidi Smithson (Green).
