Football shirts signed by the greatest players in the world (and Huddersfield) are to go under the hammer.

An impressive collection of memorabilia including authentic tops signed by Brazil legend Pele, Argentina’s Maradonna and Huddersfield Town legends Denis Law and Frank Worthington are up for sale.

And fans of rare sports gear needn’t trek to Sotheby’s or Bonhams as the lots are up for sale at a rural village boozer.

The remarkable auction – which also includes other sports and film items – has been assembled by pub landlord Chris Barrow at the Flying Ferret in Shelley.

Other rare merchandise up for grabs to the highest bidder includes a London 2012 Olympic games maker bag signed by Usain Bolt, a poster from the 2005 Champions League final won by Liverpool and a Chelsea cap signed by Jose Mourinho.

Chris hopes to raise thousands for two charities when the sale has concluded.

A charity auction will be held at the Flying Ferret in Shelley featuring a host of rare football shirts, and sports and film memorabilia. The Frank Worthington signed Town shirt.

He said he had dreamed up the idea after deciding to host a family fun day marking 50 years since England won the world cup in 1966.

He said: “It’s one of those things, I just started collecting a few bits and it grew and grew.

“I’ve got stuff from all over the place, I’ve begged stolen and borrowed,” he joked.

“I got hooked in to it and so I said why don’t we try and do something big for the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, especially with the fire they’ve had.

“I wrote to a lot of football clubs and had some stuff donated and some of it is from my own collection.

“Some of the customers have donated a few bits. I’ve no idea what it’s all worth.

“I think some of the stuff is pretty rare, for instance the Usain Bolt bag, I’ve never seen one of those before, and the poster from the Champions League final.”

Chris hopes the Pele shirt will raise several hundred pounds alone and is targeting a £3,000 total.

Town fans may be disappointed as the Denis Law shirt is a Manchester City one.

But the Frank Worthington shirt is definitely a Town item, recently signed by the man himself who is a neighbour of a customer’s dad.

Non-football items listed include an Elvis Presley film cell, a Rafa Nadal tennis racket, a signed Freddie Flintoff cricket top, and an original Star Wars film cell.

The 66 lot auction takes place at 7.30pm at the Flying Ferret on Friday, July 29.
