A PIECE of artwork could be given a prominent site alongside a busy road in Dewsbury.

Council officials are considering installing an example of public art and landscaping at the gateway to Dewsbury at the corner of Halifax Road and Bradford Road.

The scheme would cost in the region of £47,000.

The spot has been criticised by members of Dewsbury Chamber of Trade and the Dewsbury Area Committee for its poor appearance.

The improvements would help Kirklees Council meet one of its 12 performance targets, which include enhancing the health and vibrancy of Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Holmfirth town centres.

Members of the Dewsbury Area Committee agreed to the scheme at their meeting yesterday.

Other improvement work has already taken place in Dewsbury.

This has included new street lighting at Wakefield Old Road, tidying up Rishworth Underpass and installing artwork panels in partnership with Dewsbury Art College.
