A public meeting will be held next week as a campaign to introduce 20mph zones on all residential side streets in Marsh gathers pace.

The Marsh Community Forum wants the new maximum speed limits brought in and has arranged the meeting on Thursday, March 10, at the Marsh Conservative Club, in Abb Street, starting at 7pm.

Anna Semlyen, from the organisation 20’s Plenty for Us, will be the guest speaker and will describe what has been achieved in other parts the country where 20mph zones have been introduced.

Many local authorities in the UK have voted to implement 20mph limits on residential roads as they no longer consider the old 30mph limit to be fit for purpose.

It is estimated that approximately 15 million people in England now live in roads with 20mph limits.

Calderdale Council recently voted to introduce 20mph limits on a number of residential streets by 2017, saying its vision ‘is to make our streets safe and pleasant for all children and adults however they travel or wherever they live’.

The Marsh Community Forum wants similar action in Kirklees, but says so far the response from the council has been ‘disappointing’.

Local ward councillors have been invited to attend the meeting, and the forum has leafleted 2,000 houses in the area. It says it is ‘committed to this campaign and we invite residents and local business representatives to the meeting to share their views on this important safety initiative’.

Committee member Mike Woodward has said many local authorities were realising the 30mph limit was “no longer fit for purpose” in residential streets.

And forum chairman Paul Cooney said there were many benefits of a 20mph zone.
