RUGBY league fans battling to keep their historic supporters' club alive are to hold a public meeting next week.

Huddersfield Rugby League Supporters' Club, based at Spaines Road, Fartown, has hundreds of members.

Its clubhouse is also home to a host of thriving sports and community associations who use the building for free.

But the future of all those groups has been thrown into doubt after Kirklees Council raised their rent demands for the building from £2 to £10,500.

The meeting is being held at the building next Tuesday at 7.30pm.

Councillors Annie Smith and Mehboob Khan will be present. They want as many people to attend and show their backing for the campaign to quash the demand.

Gerald Furness has been trying to negotiate with Kirklees Council on behalf of the club.

"No doubt we'll get the rent demand down but I don't think we'll get it down to £2 a year."

Shirley Furness, Gerald's wife and secretary of the supporters' club, added:

"I wouldn't think there's another club in Kirklees that does as much as we do for the local community."
