A business plan to save Kirkburton Library is being developed.

And it could see the Parish Council make an asset transfer bid and relocate to the library.

A public meeting takes place tomorrow night, Tuesday October 7, at Kirkburton Hub at 7.30pm when Kirklees officers and councillors will be available to talk about the plans and for the public to raise any questions and concerns.

It comes as Kirklees Council looks to make drastic cuts to the library services that could see just Huddersfield and Dewsbury libraries remain open unless the community steps forward.

Kirkburton Parish Council is one of a number of organisations - which includes community groups - that is considering how to continue the library service at community level.

Clr Robert Barraclough, Parish and Kirklees Green Party councillor, said: “It is important now that local councillors take the initiative.

“We can’t afford to wait for Kirklees to implement a closure programme and in the meantime protest helplessly from the sidelines.

“We need to develop our own proposals and ensure a robust business case is made which secures the buildings future and the services it offers.”

His party colleague Clr Derek Hardcastle added: “Our proposal to move the Parish Council offices into the Library building will help ensure the long term viability of the Library.

“As a public body the Parish Council is well placed to make a convincing case to Kirklees to transfer the building at nil or negligible cost. Any proposals we make regarding the future of Kirkburton Library will be public and open.”

The councillors proposed and seconded a motion that was backed and will see Kirkburton Parish Council continue negotiations with Kirklees on a Community Asset Transfer agreement and a Service Level Agreement to maintain library services at Kirkburton Library.

There was also agreement to develop a draft business plan for a Community Asset Transfer and to relocate the Parish Office to the Kirkburton Library site.
