PEOPLE have been asked to get behind their local pub.

The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has launched Community Pubs Week.

The group claims that 56 locals are going out of business every month, with more than a thousand under threat at any one time.

CAMRA spokesman Tony Jerome warned landlords they would have to adapt to avoid closure.

He said: “If pubs are to survive in today’s competitive leisure industry then it is important that they become more focused on their marketing. Licensees need to find out what people want, organise events, and promote them accordingly.

“Unfortunately the day has gone when people visited a pub just because it was a pub. Community Pubs Week offers the perfect opportunity for pubs to experiment with organising and promoting events to see what impact these can have on their business.”

Community Pubs Week runs from February 16 to 23.
