TWO women braved the gruelling Great North Run and raised at least £1,100 for charity.

Pub landlady Barbara Drummond and barmaid Sue Metcalfe ran 13.1 miles from Newcastle to South Shields.

They thanked their customers for rallying round at the Dusty Miller pub in Gilead Road, Longwood.

Sue, 46, is an accomplished runner and was tackling the run for the fourth time.

But it was the first time for Barbara, 49.

Mrs Drummond said: "Sue persuaded me to take part and I have been in training since January.

"I must say it wasn't as bad as I expected, even though I had a heavy cold and flu."

Sue finished the run in 2hr 40min while Barbara took 10 minutes longer.

Their sponsorship cash will be split between West End junior football club at Salendine Nook, and Leeds General Infirmary.

Mrs Drummond said: "Everybody's been very good with their support.

"Somebody overheard me talking about it and gave £5 straight away."
