PUPILS got the chance to meet housing staff as part of a scheme to promote good behaviour.

Children from Stile Common Junior School, Newsome, and Birstall’s Fieldhead Junior visited Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing to get an insight into their communities.

The trip was part of an initiative called KNH Kids, a citizenship project set up for children aged seven to 11.

Staff from KNH have been working with teachers at both schools to make pupils more aware of how their behaviour affects their homes and communities.

Lessons they have been taught include getting involved in their areas, respecting each other and the history of social housing

Helen O’Sullivan, manager of the scheme, said: “We want to engage with children who live on our estates and to develop positive relationships and good behaviour that will last into adulthood.

“Both the schools and our staff have been thrilled about how successful the classwork has been.

“It’s been a wonderful opportunity to engage with the children and raise the profile of KNH in the school communities.”

The pilot project has also seen the children taking part in competitions to design time capsules to bury in their school grounds and create safe housing estates.

The winners from each school received certificates and gift vouchers.
