FORMER pupils returned to Birdsedge First School to bid farewell to retiring deputy head teacher Christine Hirst.
They joined staff, pupils and parents to present Mrs Hirst with a gold watch to mark her retirement after 27 years at the school.
Mrs Hirst joined the school as deputy head 27 years ago from a teaching post in Crofton, Wakefield.
During her time at Birdsedge, she has served four head teachers and has also been a school governor for 27 years.
Mrs Hirst recently became a grandmother. Her daughter, Alicia, gave birth to a daughter, Samantha, about two months ago.
Now Mrs Hirst and her husband, Rob, a retired Wakefield PE teacher, plan to move from their Fixby home to Hampshire to be nearer their daughter.
