CHILDREN from two Huddersfield schools aimed to set a new world record.

They sang simultaneously with thousands of others from across the country in a bid to smash a world record - and raise money for the Sargent Cancer Care for Children charity.

The World's Biggest Sing, organised by national music promotion group Young Voices, aimed to hit the right notes at 2.45pm yesterday.

More than 50 children from Kirkburton Middle School and 100 from Stile Infant and Nursery School took part in the challenge with the a song called For a Better Tomorrow, specially chosen for the challenge.

At the centre of the record bid was a concert at the MEN Arena in Manchester led by nine-year-old Irish TV singing sensation and chart star Declan with the Young Voices Choir.

Headteacher Mrs Dawn Horton said: "We have done a lot for cancer charities in the past, particularly because one of our pupils, six-year-old Toby Kowalski, suffers from leukaemia.

"And we want the children to know what is going on in the real world."

Among those singing was a little Chinese girl who arrived at the school only two weeks ago.

"When she arrived the only English she knew was a nursery rhyme and she has learnt this song perfectly," said Mrs Horton.

Mr Andrew Parker, head teacher at Kirkburton Middle School, said: "We are delighted to be involved in breaking a new world record and at the same time supporting a really fantastic cause helping brave young cancer patients at the start of Children's Cancer Month."

Julia Jones, of Sargent Cancer Care, said: "We are thrilled that Kirkburton Middle School and Stile Common Infant and Nursery School have taken part.

"We can't thank them enough for the money they are raising to help children with cancer."
